Religious Freedom in America Came from Turmoil

The Spanish Armada portrait of Queen Elizabeth showed why
"half of Europe is afraid of her."

England varied between Catholic (Mary) and Protestant (Elizabeth) queens, followed by Stuart kings (James I, Charles I, Charles II) who were secret Catholics. Conflict and persecution motivated people to seek religious freedom in America, not freedom from religion. We began as a religious nation, a city set on a hill, with freedom to worship without government interference or persecution.
